Hair disorders form an integral part of dermatology and are exclusively a dermatologist’s domain. (There is no such thing as a separate hair specialist; beware of unqualified people claiming to be hair specialists.) A vast and interesting field, filled with its own set of mysteries and challenges, understanding and treating hair disorders is not anybody’s cup of tea. There is so much more beyond just hair fall and hair thinning.   
 
With the vast sea of new literature and availability of diagnostic tools like trichoscopy, there is new hope for a lot of cases which were previously considered to have a poor outcome. We are also in a better position to differentiate a lot of hair disorders that appear very similar to each other. 

Technology and dermatology:   

While medical therapies are unique to each patient, let me walk you through some procedures that are popular add-ons to medical therapy:
  • PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy and the newer variant GFC-PRP: One of the most popular treatments for hair regrowth. 8-16ml blood is collected and centrifuged to separate the yellow portion of your blood, which is rich in growth factors. This yellow portion is injected at regular intervals back into your scalp with a very fine needle. Yes, it’s a little painful, much less than before with the newer, more advanced kits, but it's also backed by plenty of papers and publications supporting its efficacy. It essentially helps your scalp generate new blood vessels around your hair roots, hence improving the microcirculation and ensuring your hairs are better nourished. Sessions may be done once in 3-6 weeks and 6-10 sessions may be needed in total.
  • Micro-needling mesotherapy: ideal for those with less significant balding, but significant resistance to treatment. It involves creating millions of micro-channels over the scalp with a micro-needling device followed by an infusion of a stem cell booster. This also improves scalp microvasculature and enhances penetration of topical medicines used. Sessions are done every 2-4 weeks and 10-12 sessions may be needed in total. Discomfort during the treatment is minimal and hence is a reasonable substitute for PRP for those with needle anxiety.
  • PDO threads for scalp: a minimally invasive procedure, where simple dissolvable threads are placed within your scalp skin, which increases the natural growth factor output of your scalp. A single session augments growth factor production for a year, hence is advantageous in those who are not available for multiple in-clinic sessions. Yes!! Only a dermatologist is qualified to treat hair problems. There is no separate specialization called trichology. In fact, any doctor claiming to be a trichologist only, not a dermatologist, is likely to be unqualified.
